To me as a photographer the topic of what to wear for a photo session is very important, and I always want to discuss it with my clients.

When we are planning a photo session, the biggest part of it — is what to wear!.. other than date and location.

To get beautiful family photos it’s not necessary to dress up to the nines! Yes, it is a special event for your family, because a photo session usually doesn’t happen every week or every month. But all it is — you just have to look good and cohesive as a family, feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. That’s All!

I think feeling comfortable is the most important ingredient for an awesome family photo. Choosing the right clothing will help to achieve that.

The other thing is that sometimes clients already have a specific idea of a photoshoot they want to do. And of course the outfit should reflect that idea, that’s why we will need to discuss all the details and the intricacies of the outfit. Which can be a really fun process!

Anyways, here are my suggestions to consider when deciding on what to wear for a family photoshoot:

Coordinate colors for a photo session.

Choose colors that complement each other to achieve a cohesive look. You don’t need to all match exactly, but sticking to a color palette will ensure that the finished product looks polished and put-together.

Dress for the occasion.

Consider the location and the style of the shoot when selecting your outfits — you don’t want to wear a formal gown for a casual photoshoot in the park.

Avoid logos or graphics.

Loud prints, logos, or graphic tees can be distracting and take the focus away from your family.

Layer.

Adding layers and textures can add visual interest to your outfits while helping you stay comfortable in different temperatures.

Accessorize.

Accessories can add a pop of color or personality to your outfits. Jewelry, hats, scarves, or even props (such as balloons or flowers) can be great additions.

Remember, the most important thing is that you’re comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. Choosing outfits that make you feel your best will ensure you look relaxed and happy in your family photos.
