As a portrait photographer in Burnaby, I work with women who are mothers, partners, leaders. Modern women are busy, they rarely have time to stay in the moment, and reflect, and think “what do I want?”
For many women I photographed, booking a Burnaby portrait session isn’t just about getting beautiful images. It’s about feeling safe, seen, and fully present so the photographs capture not just their appearance, but their essence, confidence, and connection to the people and moments that matter most.
That kind of image takes more than good lighting. It takes emotional preparation.
Here’s how we prepare emotionally together:
- the conversations we have,
- the intention we set,
- and the emotional safety we build so that what shows up in your images is you.

1. Starting With Conversation
When we first connect, I’m not asking about your schedule or your colour palette. I’ll ask to understand who you are in this particular season of your life and what has been taking up so much of you lately?
- We talk about your story. What milestones, connections, or feelings do you want these images to honor?
- We explore your fears and hesitations. The part of you that wonders if this is too much, or if you’re too much: too visible, too vulnerable, too far outside what feels safe. Maybe it’s “I don’t know how to pose” or “I feel self-conscious in front of the camera.” That’s normal, and it’s important to acknowledge it. And knowing your edges lets me work with them.
- We clarify your vision. What kind of energy, mood, or legacy do you want these photographs to convey?
Many of the women I work with have been so focused outward that looking inward feels almost foreign. This conversation is where we begin to change that. It’s the foundation. It’s where your session begins, emotionally, so you can step in feeling understood and confident.
2. Setting Intentions
Every portrait session is more than just pictures, it’s an experience. Together, we define an intention for your session:
- A celebration of a chapter in your life, your identity, your motherhood, your family, or your personal growth.
- A moment to honor the relationships that matter most.
- A chance to feel seen, empowered, and authentic.
Intentions guide our movements, poses, and interactions during the session. They give your photographs depth and meaning that lasts far beyond the images themselves.

3. Emotional Safety
Feeling safe and supported is essential for authenticity. On the day of your session, we start slow. I’m not picking up my camera the moment you walk in. I let you settle into the space and into being seen before we begin.
We usually start with something easy and simple. For example, you seated, looking away from the lens. There’s very little direction at first. I’m watching how you move naturally, what your hands do when you’re relaxed, how the light falls across your face when you’re not thinking about being photographed.
Silence is welcome here. Not every moment needs me talking. Some of the most powerful images come from the in-between moments. The moment before you turned, or after you smiled, the second you forgot I was there.
I check in throughout, show you the images on my camera, ask if you are comfortable and ask for your opinion as well. This is collaborative. You are a participant in your own story.
Preparing Beyond Outfits
Yes, picking your wardrobe matters, but emotional preparation is the real secret to photographs that capture legacy, love, and life. Taking the time to reflect, set intentions, and feel supported emotionally ensures that your session is effortless, authentic, and memorable.
A session that honors your emotions becomes more than a photo session, it becomes a transformative experience. You leave with:
- Confidence in your presence, appearance, and story.
- Connection with your loved ones in Family portraits, or with yourself in Your own Portraits.
- Images that reflect your energy and become about You.
If you are looking for a portrait photographer in Burnaby or the Greater Vancouver area, who prepares you fully, I would love to connect.
