The lighting is beautiful. Really beautiful. But it’s also intense.
And what happens is this: strong studio light can wash out your features, flatten dimension, make you look a little more tired than you actually are. Not because you are tired, just because that’s what bright light does.
So when I say professional hair and makeup is included in your luxury portrait session, and you say “Oh, I don’t really wear makeup” or “I just want to look like myself”, I completely understand.
Because that’s exactly the point!
As a Burnaby portrait photographer, I’ve learned that the makeup artist isn’t there to transform you into someone else. She’s there to make sure the camera sees what you actually look like. What your partner sees across the table. What your best friend sees when you’re laughing together. You.
She evens your skin tone so the lighting doesn’t distort it. Defines your eyes and brows so your expression comes through. Adds just enough dimension so your face doesn’t flatten under the lights. You walk away looking polished, feeling confident.
But here’s what I’ve noticed over the years working with families in Burnaby and Vancouver.
The real shift doesn’t happen because of the makeup itself.
It happens when you sit in that chair and someone takes care of you for a bit. That’s when the whole energy changes. You settle in. You breathe. You get a little excited. And by the time we start your studio session, you’re not nervous anymore. You’re not rushed. You’ve forgotten to worry about the camera.
That’s when everything clicks.
That’s when I get the timeless portraits you’ll love.
So yes, makeup is part of every luxury family photography session. Not to hide anything. Just to let you shine through exactly as you are.

What Does Family Really Mean?

My Why — Why Family Photography?

Minimal Poses, Maximum Authenticity

I recently had a headshot session with Maria, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. She was extremely professional, well-prepared, and even arranged for a professional makeup artist, which made such a difference.
I usually hate myself in photos and struggle with posing, but Maria was incredibly patient and gave me great tips that made me feel comfortable and confident. The photos turned out amazing. I will definitely be returning for future sessions and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a skilled and supportive photographer.
