When it comes to Family lifestyle photography, it’s all about capturing those real moments and interactions in a relaxed setting. The goal, that I keep in mind, is to document the genuine connections and dynamics within the family, and show their story.

So my job as a photographer is to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere during the photoshoot, make sure everyone are on the same page and having a good time. When people are allowed to have fun and enjoy the moment, it usually lead to more positive and enthusiastic energy. And as the result — more productive and successful photo session.

Yes, it’s easy to say, but not an easy thing to do. And there are many things to consider! In this Blog post I will share my techniques that help me capture candid family lifestyle photographs in Vancouver.

Pre-shoot Consultation. Let’s Chat Before the Shoot!

Before the big day, I will have a quick chat with the family to get to know their vision, preferences, and goals for the photoshoot. This helps us get on the same page, plan logistics, and make sure it’s a personalized experience just for you.

We will discuss the location. And we will choose the one that holds significance for the family, such as their home, a local park, or a favorite spot in Vancouver.

We are very lucky to be surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Vancouver and its outdoor locations like parks, beaches, urban streets, or iconic landmarks that serve as picturesque backdrops and add depth, and context to the images.

Even though there are so many locations to choose from, the main focus is on capturing the family in their natural environment, where they feel comfortable and can freely express themselves.

The outfits for the photo session have a huge impact on that. Actually what to wear for a photo session is a giant topic and you can read more on that in my other blog posts.

Minimal Poses, Maximum Authenticity.

Let me tell you a secret — Lifestyle photographers love real, genuine interactions between family members. Natural and unposed moments are Gold! And I’m All about it!

I’m the photographer who would encourage your child to do whatever s/he wants — be playful, jump, run, pick up the umpteenth rock and show it to me. I also love capturing candid moments of connection, laughter, and playfulness among family members.

That’s why I don’t pose my models.I think conducted posing is taking away the naturalness (is that a word?) of the whole moment. What I often do is I guide, suggesting what would be fun things to do, like: running, spinning, hugging tight and etc.

When people have a little guidance, they feel more comfortable, as they have something to focus on. And they forget for a minute or two about me and my camera.

Also I find that when I ask my clients Not to look at the camera, they become more themselves. And it creates a natural feel to the photos.

For that I shoot in silent mode and I’m more focused on creating a connection with the person infront of my camera. Which leads into a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere during the photoshoot for everyone.

When people are free to be themselves and express their emotions and personalities, it can lead to more genuine moments that allow the family’s true dynamics to shine through.

Attention to Details

I love the documentary style approach to my photosessions. What it means is that I try to create a visual story of the family’s life. From capturing small details, such as a child’s playful expression, a parent’s loving touch, or a cherished family heirlom, to a mix of wide-angle shots and portraits. That collectively create a narrative of the session and it becomes more of a personalized experience.

After the session, all the photographs go through a selection process and only those that really resonate with my vision will be retouched. I don’t use Photoshop in post-processing. It’s more of a light touch, enhancing the images while saving a natural and timeless feel. This preserves the authenticity of the moments captured during the session.

So all above described techniques help me build a collection of images that reflect the emotions and joy shared within the families. And I want for my collection to grow.

I love the photographs to be served as cherished memories that capture a specific time and place in lives of the families I photographed in Vancouver.
