So in my previous post I’ve talked about the cohesive look. What is it exactly, you may ask. Well, I’ve looked into that and found out that Merriam-Webster dictionary defines cohesion as “the act or state of sticking together tightly.”
Capsule set theory for a photo session.
In regards to the wardrobe, I would probably describe a cohesive look like a Capsule set. Where most of the tops work with most of the bottoms, in terms of color, style and materials. So they can be combined in multiple ways, like a capsule.
Ok, now for a photo session, I think this Capsule set method can perfectly be applied as well. Not only for a person, but for the whole family.
Let’s say that there are 3 models I have for a photo session — mom, dad and their toddler. To achieve the cohesive look, the family outfit needs to reflect the “state of sticking together tightly”. Now I’d wonder how the family is going to do that?!
From my previous post, we learned that the first step is to coordinate colors. So the clothes would ideally be in the same color palette and in the same style.
A simple formula to create the best look for a photo session.
Take a look at your wardrobe — what color is the majority of your clothes? Pick that one! The same process is for your kid’s wardrobe, and your husband’s.
Here is a tip — Neutrals or base colors look good on any person, because of their simple versatile nature. Probably you have a couple pieces of the same neutral/base color. Yes, they are popular, can be worn all year round and at any age! — The first image below.
You can pair neutrals with main colors for a contrasting outfit or for a tonal outfit. Depends what you have more in your wardrobe.
The main colors that I’m naturally drawn to — the second image below.
These colors are my brand colors and you can see them in my photography. I usually recommend these colors a lot, because I think they are universal. They would look good with any type of skin color and also they give me a warm and cozy feeling.
Once you’ve chosen your neutral and main colors for an outfit, you may also decide on adding the piece of accessory to create an accent.
When I was researching the color palettes on the internet, I stumbled upon a short article about the color scheme formula. And to me it sounds brilliant!
So I want to share it here with you:
“The formula allows you to create balance with the 60:30:10+b/w (black/white). This method will help distribute your colors for a more harmonious look”
Accents for an outfit.
Those 10% are for the accents — accessories that add a pop of color or personality to your outfits. Jewelry, hats, scarves, or even props (such as balloons or flowers) for example.
This formula is a great solution for putting together capsule outfits for the whole family.
So now when colors and accents are put together, my models would look good. Either together, just by themselves or with the toddler. Because they’ve created a balanced cohesive look.
Do you see yourself using this outfit formula? Well, I do!
xx
